The mobile schools of hope
Bangladesh, despite its recent advances in growth, is a country subject to ongoing political upheaval and frequent natural disasters. It is still one of the poorest countries in the world and, according to UN statistics, over 75% of its 160 million population live on less than 2 US$ a day.
Everyday life there is a constant struggle, particularly for children. It’s hard to imagine, but many of the children have never seen the inside of a classroom, learned how to read or write, or to use a computer – things we simply take for granted in the UK.
Instead, children from impoverished backgrounds are breadwinners from an early age – working for next to nothing to support themselves and their families. Parents simply cannot afford to send their children to school, which means paying fees, and having to buy books and uniforms.
One of the UN development goals is that every child should have a primary school place by 2015. Currently, only 45% of children go on to finish primary education.
How You Can Help
As part of the ChildrenPlus Mobile Schools Project, we are aiming to launch 3 Mobile Schools in Bangladesh, targeting some of the most destitute and impoverished children living in the streets and slums of Bangladesh’s 3 biggest cities: Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. In the future we are hoping to launch a fleet of buses in other parts of the world.
The buses will be clean and well constructed resembling a classroom with tables, chairs and blackboards. On board, there will be a team of 2 teachers, classroom assistant, driver and helper. Subjects taught will include English, Bangla, Maths, Science and Religious education.
The schools will be free for children to attend, with additional sponsorship programmes covering costs for any fees, books, shoes, uniforms, etc.
We will also be providing freshly cooked meals every day, providing much-needed nutrition to the children, most of whom cannot afford even one square meal a day.
A special “Thank You” to Haleema Malik, of CAD AND COFFEE, and her team (Gayathiri Muthuraaman, Tuofan Jiao, Elena Padovan and Shaju Maharjan) for the 3D imagery of the Mobile School bus.
